It has been a long time I have not been able to ride properly, or go to a bike park. After a good stretch of heavy family duties, I found myself at home alone and a lot of stress to unload from my back. Having already visited Gawton (enjoing it very much) I was left with the choice: Bike Park Wales or Project 417. The last won, because of the novelty and the fact of having the opportunity to visit it again might not materialize in the long term. So I jumped in the car, threw a brick at the gas pedal and stopped nearby Glouchester.

Is it any good? Yes, very. Is it worth the drive from Exeter? Not unless you have completely worn out every other bike park. The…er project, in itself, is hugely interesting. You are faced with a farm that, exept for offices and a decent restaurant, hosts a covered concrete pumptrack created by Velosolutions, covered and uncovered jump spots, a 4x and dual slalom track, and 3 Land Rover assisted descents. From the blue to the black, all of them are very good and capable of keeping you entertained for a good half of the day. But. To access the pumptrack you have to pay 9 pounds more than the 33 already paid for lift +access, the dirt jumps are actually huge, proper stuff. In the end, you have just 3 tracks to descend from (being the 4x and dual closed because of mud, which sounds a bit funny in the UK).

I imagine the starting of such a structure to be a nightmare of costs, justifying the prices. The pumptrack is worth a visit itself being lit and with music, and this is the first year. I also noticed that people working there was really professional and well organized.

Anyway, I tested the descents and had proper fun doing it with my hardtail, and nearly faceplanted myself on the last double of the red (I saw others doing the same, so the lift off ramp might be slightly weird). I just think the main drawback for me, a family man, is that it could have been deadly boring for wife and kids had I brought them with me. I hope people there will keep up with the good job and continue developing it.

Da un po’ non ero in grado di pedalare decentemente o fare qualche discesa in un bike park. Dopo un certo periodo di doveri familiari, mi sono ritrovato da solo a casa e con un bel po’ di stress accumulato da scaricare. Avendo gia’ visitato Gawton (che ho trovato estremamente divertente), mi sono ritrovato a scegliere tra Bike Park Wales e Poject 417. Ho scelto l’ultimo, principalmente perche’ non avevo idea di quando mi si sarebbe potuta ripresentare l’occasione, ma anche per le recensioni dei giornali. Quindi sono saltato in auto, ho buttato un mattone sul pedale dell’acceleratore e mi sono fermato dalle parti di Glouchester. E’ un posto che vale? Si, molto. Merita la tradotta da Exeter? A meno che non abbiate usurato ogni altro bike park nei dintorni, assolutamente no.

Il progetto, di suo, e’ enormemente interessante. Ci si ritrova davanti a una fattoria che, eccetto per uffici e un discreto ristorante, ospita una pumptrack coperta e asfaltata realizzata da Velosolution, pistini da dirt sia coperti che scoperti, piste da 4x e dual slalom e 3 discese con risalita a cortesia di Land Rover. Le discese di per se’, dalla blu alla nera, sono di ottima qualita’ e capaci di intrattenervi per una mezza giornata buona. Ma. Prima di tutto, per accedere alla pumptrack dovete sfoderare altre 9 sterline oltre alle 33 gia’ spese per accesso+ risalita, i dirt sono roba grossa e seria e le piste da 4x e dual slalom erano chiuse causa fango (abbastanza buffo considerando che si trovano in Gran Bretagna).

Pero’ immagino che avviare una struttura privata simile abbia dei costi vivi da incubo, il che giustifica i prezzi. Inoltre il pumptrack, che vale da solo la visita, e’ illuminato e dotato di musica, e bisogna tener conto che si tratta del primo anno. Un altro punto a favore, sono la professionalita’ e precisione del personale.

Mi sono divertito parecchio con la front su quelle tre discese, rischiando di atterrare di faccia dal doppio alla fine della rossa (ho notato altri fare lo stesso errore, che puo’ voler dire che la rampa e’ un po’ strana). Per me, uomo con famiglia, il principale ostacolo e’ la noia che il posto puo’ rappresentare per moglie e bimbi. Per il resto spero che lo sviluppo di un’idea cosi’ solida prosegua.
